The US Virgin Islands are a popular destination for travelers looking for a Caribbean getaway. With its lush natural landscape, rich history, and stunning beaches, the US Virgin Islands offer something for everyone. But which of the three main islands is the least crowded? St. Croix is the largest of the three islands and receives the least amount of tourists, making it a great destination if you want a less commercial Caribbean experience.
When planning your trip to the US Virgin Islands, it's important to consider the best time to visit. The islands have a moderate climate all year round, with temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to the upper 80s. The best time to visit is from April to June when you can expect mild weather with little rainfall. However, it's important to keep in mind that hurricane season runs from June to November.
St. Thomas is home to a popular cruise port and an airport, so it's probably no surprise that it's also the busiest and most commercialized of the three main islands that make up the US Virgin Islands. John is less crowded than St. Thomas and more than 11,500 acres (approximately two-thirds of the island) are protected as US National Park, which means there's much less activity than in St.
Thomas. Croix has managed to avoid much of the tourism that prevails on the other two islands. It is the largest in the US Virgin Islands and offers a variety of attractions (such as three golf courses) without feeling too crowded. The British Virgin Islands are intertwined with each other, and the international border between them is a bit blurry (although heavily patrolled).
Tortola is home to 80 percent of the country's population and is known for its luxury resorts and stylish accommodations. Virgin Gorda is known for its rock formation known as The Baths, Copper Mine National Park, and Virgin Gorda Peak which offer outdoor exploration opportunities. Jost Van Dyke is known for its beach bars, restaurants and its unspoiled Caribbean atmosphere. Accommodations are few and far between, but Jost Van Dyke is home to clean, uncrowded beaches and a world-renowned New Year's Eve party (locally called New Year's Eve).
No matter which island you choose to visit, you'll find plenty of activities such as snorkeling, diving, underwater photography, kayaking, sailing, kitesurfing, fishing, windsurfing and more! Plus you can explore historic sites such as plantations and pirate hideouts. Ready to pack your bags?
